My son found a dead bear. It's been partially eaten already. I'd like to try to preserve some of the bones once the flesh has been eaten but the thing is I have to let it lay where it is and it's frozen.

Does anyone know how I would go about this without desecrating either the bear or the land?

Say a prayer for the bear and leave an offering. Cover it with a thin layer of soil/humus/leaves. Let nature take its course.

Then decide, based on dreams, if you go through with it. I will take a year or two for it to be ready.

I had a similar experience last year, but with an owl. For several weeks before, an owl had been appearing to me in trance. Then one afternoon I found a recently dead owl beneath the trees at a relative's house. They live in another state (I was visiting), and I didn't feel comfortable asking them to store it in their freezer so I could take it home with me when I left. Since then I can't shake the feeling that I did not honor what was offered to me.

Have you tried doing something to honour what was offered to you?

Yes, as much as I felt that I could at the time. I said a prayer to honor its life and its passage into the otherworld, and saw that it was disposed of in a respectful manner (suburban area, couldn't just leave it there). But I felt that a gift had been offered to me and that I was meant to make use of it, which is where I failed. The sequence of events and the feeling I had in the presence of the owl made it clear to me that this wasn't just a random occurrence.

We all fail at times, we all make mistakes and we've all missed opportunities. All we can do is try to atone for them and not make the same mistake again.

You may well be offered something as a gift again : next time, be prepared to take it.

I once had that issue with an elk... fortunately somewhere I could go back to (near a cabin my grandparents owned.) And I never did figure out what the skull was for... I think it was more about making me hack it off the fairly mummified corpse than actually keeping the thing. It took me two years to do it (I admit to the ewwwwww-yucky factor.) Two years of the thing taunting me.

From this I learned:
1) Know how you are going to get it home.
2) Know how you are going to finish cleaning it
3) Know where you are going to put it.

I also would recomend being prepared to have to finish hacking it apart. I thought my elk would rot, which is part of why I waited two years, but it stayed pretty much the same. Hide and siniew will last.
